Erie Canal’s Western New York Experience

The Lockport Cave is a natural cave beneath the city of Lockport, New York.

One of the most fascinating experiences of the Erie Canal is located in Lockport to North Tonawanda, aptly called the “Gateway to the Erie Canal”.  In addition to the Lockport Caves and the Erie Canal Museum there is the Erie Canal Cruises ride on the actual Canal and along the way feel what it’s like to be raised 50 feet as you pass through historic Locks 34 & 35.  There is also the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum that is a National Historic Site.  In Buffalo there is the Albright-Knox Art Gallery that houses paintings from 3000 BC, and Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site downtown on Delaware Avenue.  And lastly, there is a tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex that was built from 1903 to 1905.

Erie Canal – Syracuse, Cazenovia & Chittenango

Discover the industry that created the City of Syracuse and supplied the entire nation with salt! The museum, located on the shore of Onondaga Lake, is full of dynamic exhibits and artifacts.

New York’s canal system has been in continuous operation since 1825, longer than any other constructed transportation system on the continent.  It embodies an unbroken tradition of living waterways and it is on display front and center in Central New York. Syracuse has the Erie Canal Museum, located in the last weigh lock building in the United States, the Onondaga Historical Association Museum along with the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center in nearby Fayetteville.  Take the short drive to Cazenovia and tour the 1808 constructed lakefront home of John Lincklaen, named LorenzoLincklaen was the land agent for the original Holland Land Company.  Another short drive north along Cazenovia Lake and we come to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum.  Here, on the banks of the original Erie Canal is a small, restored village museum of the 1860’s. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 96-foot long cargo boats were built and repaired on this site and the Museum tells the workings of this dry dock.  Time to ride the tram along Onondaga Lake with a visit to the Salt Museum that tells the history of the “salt boilers” and the real story of the “salt potato’s” origin. There’s time to shop at the Carousel Center Mall before departing for home.

Rome-Utica and the Mohawk Valley

The first spades full of dirt for the Erie Canal were turned in Rome and a short span of the original canal still remains that can be visited.  In addition, tour the Fort Stanwix Monument, a restored 18th century frontier fort that played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War.  The Fort is outfitted with guides in period costume who share information with you about life in the 1700’s.  History abounds in the region and down the road a short distance is the Oriskany Battlefield that saw one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolution when American patriots under General Nicholas Herkimer were ambushed on their way to relieve the siege at Fort Stanwix.  Nearby at the village of Herkimer is the Gems Along the Mohawk store that has products produced by over 60 businesses located in the Mohawk Valley.  In addition to an excellent restaurant there is L’ll Diamond Cruises that offers trips on the Erie Canalway on whose banks the Gems store is situated.  In Utica there is the Matt Brewing Company that demonstrates the process of beer manufacturing as well as the Munson-Williams Proctor Arts Institute that is a fine arts center with programs in the visual and performing arts and an art museum.

The Erie and Champlain Canals Plus Historical Schenectady

Waterford is the oldest incorporated city in the United States and is located at the confluence of the Mohawk (Erie Barge Canal) and Champlain Canal/Hudson River.  The Waterford Flight of Five is a set of five locks that are a part of the New York State Barge Canal System.  With a total elevation of 165 feet, it is the highest combined set of lift locks in the world and the Erie Champlain Canal Boat Company provides a personalized interpretive canal boat tour through the locks.  A short drive away is Falls View Park and Cohoes Falls, that is a 75-foot waterfall on the Mohawk River, and is the second largest in New York State.  There’s also Schenectady for a walk through the Schenectady Stockade an area rich with Revolutionary War and Erie Canal history.  Cobblestone streets and late 17th and early 18th century buildings add to the charm of this unique community.  Fort Hunter – at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site where you can walk along the original Erie Canal from 1825 and the Enlarged Erie from 1841.  Tour the visitor center and canal store at historic Lock 28.  Tour includes a stop at the Schenectady County Historical Society Museum of Schenectady History that contains 18th and 19th century furnishings, artifacts of Dutch heritage.  A perfect way to conclude is a visit to the Maybee Farm, the oldest building still standing in the Mohawk Valley and a part of the Schenectady Historical Society.

The Strong, formerly the Strong National Museum of Play, in Rochester, New York, is a Smithsonian Affiliate museum that documents the history of play in American culture.

Rochester, located on Lake Ontario and the Erie Canal as well, has so many excellent museums and attractions your visit will not be complete until you return.  At the Susan B. Anthony House, stand in the room where Susan B Anthony was arrested for voting, walk in the footsteps of Kodak founder George Eastman at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, step back in time to when dinosaurs walked this area at the Rochester Museum & Science Center or try your hand at 19th century crafts at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, bring back memories at the Strong Museum of Play.  All this and an Erie Canal cruise aboard the Sam Patch or the Mary Jemison as well. You’re going to be amazed!

Finger Lakes Along Routes 5 & 20 Featuring the Cayuga-Seneca Canal

Make Geneva your home while traveling east along the Cayuga-Seneca Canal to such divergent attractions in Auburn as the Seward House Museum, home of William Seward, Secretary of State under President Abraham Lincoln and the Cayuga Museum & Case Research Laboratory, site of the invention of early sound motion pictures. And also, visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls.  It was here in 1848 that the women’s suffrage movement began.  There’s time for a visit to Fox Run Vineyards and Anthony Road Winery as well as some shopping at the Waterloo Premium Outlet Center.
